UFC 315 featured one of the year’s best championship fights as Jack Della Maddalena challenged reigning UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad in Montreal. Over five intense rounds, Della Maddalena captured the title by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46), ending Muhammad’s lengthy unbeaten streak and becoming the new UFC Welterweight Champion.

The opening round immediately established the fight’s dynamic. Muhammad, known for his relentless pressure and wrestling, surprised many by willingly exchanging on the feet. Della Maddalena looked composed from the opening bell, controlling the center of the Octagon with crisp boxing combinations and sharp counters. His jab repeatedly found the target, while quick left hooks and straight rights landed before Muhammad could close the distance. Whenever the champion attempted to shoot for takedowns, Della Maddalena displayed vastly improved defensive wrestling, stuffing the attempts and quickly returning the fight to striking range. The challenger’s accuracy and timing earned him the opening round.

The second round saw Della Maddalena build momentum. He mixed body shots with clean combinations to the head, forcing Muhammad to absorb damage while struggling to establish his usual grappling rhythm. Every failed takedown attempt forced the champion to expend energy, and Della Maddalena capitalized with punishing uppercuts and short hooks as Muhammad exited the clinch. Late in the round, Muhammad’s nose began bleeding heavily after absorbing several clean punches, while the Australian continued to dictate the pace with patient, technical striking.

Recognizing he was likely behind on the scorecards, Muhammad increased his pressure in the third round. He pushed forward more aggressively, throwing longer combinations and forcing Della Maddalena toward the fence. Although he secured brief clinch control and enjoyed more success mixing punches with wrestling attempts, Della Maddalena repeatedly escaped before significant ground control could be established. The exchanges became increasingly competitive, with both men landing clean shots, but the challenger continued to produce the sharper, more damaging offense.

The championship rounds evolved into a battle of determination. In the fourth, Muhammad found moments of success by backing Della Maddalena up and mixing in takedown attempts, yet the challenger consistently defended well and punished the champion with hard combinations whenever the fight returned to open space. Both fighters showed signs of damage, but Della Maddalena remained composed under pressure and continued landing the cleaner punches throughout extended exchanges.

The fifth round produced the fight’s most dramatic moments. Knowing he needed a strong finish, Muhammad pushed forward relentlessly, but Della Maddalena answered with some of his best offense of the contest. Midway through the round, he landed a devastating flying knee that split Muhammad open and badly hurt the champion. Blood poured from Muhammad’s face as Della Maddalena followed with heavy punches that nearly forced a stoppage. Muhammad displayed tremendous heart, surviving the assault and even managing to complete a late takedown, where he landed several ground strikes before the final horn sounded. Despite the late wrestling success, Della Maddalena had already produced the round’s most significant and damaging offense.

When the scorecards were read, all three judges awarded the contest to Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision, with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46. The victory crowned him the new UFC welterweight champion, extended his professional winning streak to 18 consecutive fights, and handed Belal Muhammad his first defeat since 2019.

The fight was praised as a masterclass in technical boxing against elite pressure wrestling. Della Maddalena neutralized Muhammad’s greatest strength with outstanding takedown defense while consistently winning the striking exchanges through superior precision, shot selection, and composure. Muhammad showed remarkable toughness by fighting through a broken nose, severe facial damage, and a deep cut in the final round, but Della Maddalena’s cleaner, more effective offense over five rounds earned him a deserved championship victory.
