Tournament Quarterfinal – November 12, 1993
Result: Gerard Gordeau def. Teila Tuli via TKO (head kick and punches) at 0:26 of Round 1.

The opening fight in UFC history began with an unforgettable clash of styles. Gerard Gordeau, a 6-foot-5 Dutch striker known for his success in savate and Kyokushin karate, stood across the Octagon from Teila Tuli, a former professional sumo wrestler weighing well over 400 pounds. The bout embodied the original concept of the Ultimate Fighting Championship: determining which martial art would prevail when specialists from different disciplines met under minimal rules.

As the fight started, Tuli immediately charged forward, hoping to overwhelm Gordeau with his enormous size and power. The aggressive rush forced Gordeau to circle backward while maintaining striking distance. Tuli attempted to close the gap before the Dutchman could establish his kicking range, but his forward momentum left him vulnerable.

Gordeau timed the advance perfectly. As Tuli stumbled toward him, Gordeau fired a powerful right head kick that landed flush on the side of Tuli’s jaw. The impact instantly rocked the sumo wrestler, knocking him off balance and sending several of his teeth flying across the canvas in one of the most memorable—and graphic—moments in UFC history. The kick also lodged some of Tuli’s teeth into Gordeau’s foot, an injury Gordeau reportedly carried through the remainder of the tournament.

Although badly hurt, Tuli remained upright for a brief moment. Gordeau quickly followed with punches as Tuli collapsed to the mat near the fence. Referee João Alberto Barreto immediately intervened, recognizing that Tuli could no longer intelligently defend himself. The contest was waved off just 26 seconds after it had begun, making it the first official victory in UFC history.

The explosive finish immediately captured the attention of the live audience and pay-per-view viewers. It demonstrated the effectiveness of precision striking against a much larger opponent and established Gordeau as an early favorite in the one-night tournament. He would continue by defeating Kevin Rosier in the semifinals before ultimately falling to Royce Gracie by rear-naked choke in the championship bout.

Although the fight lasted less than half a minute, its historical significance far outweighs its duration. As the first bout ever contested inside the UFC Octagon, Gordeau vs. Tuli marked the beginning of what would become the world’s leading mixed martial arts organization. The iconic head kick knockout remains one of the defining images of early MMA and is frequently featured in retrospectives celebrating the origins of the sport.
