Petr Yan defeated Urijah Faber via a spectacular third-round knockout (left high kick) at 0:43 of Round 3 during the main card opener of UFC 245 on December 14, 2019, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout was a classic youth-versus-experience clash between the rising 26-year-old Russian contender and the 40-year-old UFC Hall of Famer.

Round-by-Round Breakdown

  • Round 1: Faber opened up actively, using his footwork to stay on the outside and landing a few clean early strikes, including a brief knee up the middle. However, Yan quickly established cage control, taking the center of the Octagon and walking Faber down. Yan used heavy low kicks to slow Faber’s movement and connected with a perfectly timed, sharp uppercut to the chin, securing the round on pressure and cleaner impact.
  • Round 2: The fight turned entirely in Yan’s favor. Early in the round, Faber attempted to grapple, but Yan effortlessly stuffed the takedowns. Yan then dropped Faber hard with a precise 1-2 punch combination down the center. Faber showed immense heart by scrambling back to his feet and landing a desperation power shot that briefly slowed Yan. Moments later, however, during a clinch exchange, Yan broke away and landed a vicious elbow that dropped Faber again. The elbow caused massive swelling and a deep cut under Faber’s left eye. The referee paused the action to allow a cageside doctor to check the injury, but the incredibly tough Faber was cleared to continue.
  • Round 3: Seeking to close the show, Yan pressured immediately at the start of the final frame. As the two fighters briefly engaged in a clinch along the fence, Yan pushed off to create separation. On the break, he launched a lightning-fast left high kick that caught Faber flush as he was pulling backward. Faber slumped immediately against the canvas, and referee Keith Peterson instantly stepped in to wave off the bout at the 43-second mark.

    Aftermath

The decisive win earned Yan a Performance of the Night bonus and extended his flawless UFC record to 6-0. Immediately after the victory, Yan used his post-fight interview to call out then-bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo, setting the stage for his eventual rise to the undisputed 135-pound title.
