Fight Description
- The Aggressive Start: Having lost his belt to Ankalaev seven months prior in a tentative five-round decision, Pereira came out with a completely altered, ultra-aggressive strategy. He pushed the action instantly, forcing Ankalaev to move backward.
- Cutting the Cage: Ankalaev attempted to move laterally to reset his stance. Pereira actively cut him off by widening his base and matching Ankalaev’s direction. He quickly compromised Ankalaev’s positioning with hard inside leg kicks.
- The Decisive Blow: As Ankalaev redirected to his left, Pereira lunged forward with a massive overhand right. The punch landed cleanly and heavily rocked Ankalaev, who immediately tried to shoot for a desperation takedown but was badly hurt.
- The Finish: Pereira easily defended the shot and pushed Ankalaev straight onto his back into half guard. “Poatan” unleashed a cold-blooded barrage of ground strikes, dropping devastating body shots and legal 12-to-6 elbows to the head.
- The Stoppage: Ankalaev had no opportunity to recover from the onslaught. Referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the contest at the 80-second mark, marking the first time Ankalaev had ever been stopped or knocked out in his professional career.
