Alexa Grasso defeated Maycee Barber via first-round knockout (KO/TKO) at the 2:42 mark of the opening round on March 28, 2026, during the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Adesanya vs. Pyfer in Seattle, Washington. The bout concluded with what was instantly hailed as one of the most brutal and alarming finishes in women’s MMA history, halting Barber’s impressive seven-fight win streak.
Fight Summary & Play-by-Play
- The Early Exchange: Maycee Barber opened the round moving forward aggressively, working from a southpaw stance and looking to put pressure on Grasso with rapid jabs and standard punch combinations. Grasso, an expert boxer, remained calm and used her defensive footwork to evade major damage while reading Barber’s entries and timing her counter-punches.
- The Devastating Counter: The ending sequence arrived abruptly in the middle of the round. Grasso timed a perfect, blistering left straight counter that landed squarely on Barber’s chin, instantly rocking her. Grasso immediately followed up with a vicious right hook to the jaw that completely severed Barber’s equilibrium, causing her to drop limply toward the canvas.
- The Finish: Displaying aggressive killer instinct, Grasso didn’t allow Barber to fully hit the floor. She immediately jumped on Barber’s back and locked in a deep rear-naked choke. Because Barber was already heavily concussed from the initial punches, she offered zero physical resistance to the submission. The compression from the choke combined with the head trauma caused Barber to lose complete consciousness. Referee Mike Beltran quickly stepped in to halt the bout, officially declaring the result a KO/TKO due to the initial damage that precipitated the stoppage.

Post-Fight Scene and Health Concerns
The immediate aftermath generated considerable concern inside the Climate Pledge Arena. After the referee pulled Grasso off, a disoriented Barber tried to reflexively wrestle the referee on pure autopilot before temporarily collapsing back into his arms. She remained largely motionless on the canvas for several minutes with her eyes open but unresponsive, prompting medical staff to quickly rush to the cage. Grasso showed immense class and respect, bypassing any excessive celebration to kneel by her opponent’s side to ensure she was uninjured. Barber was later transported to a local medical facility for evaluation but released a video message the following day reassuring fans that she was recovering and expected to make a full return.
