Gable Steveson entered the main event of Mexico Fight League 3 on February 19, 2026, facing veteran Mexican heavyweight Hugo Lezama in what was widely viewed as the toughest test of Steveson’s young MMA career. While Steveson had finished his first two professional opponents in rapid fashion, Lezama brought an 11-3 record, championship experience on the regional circuit, and a reputation for dangerous striking and finishing ability. The bout, held at the Showcenter Complex in Monterrey, was expected to reveal how the Olympic gold medalist would respond against an experienced opponent capable of threatening him on the feet.

The opening minute immediately provided more adversity than Steveson had previously encountered. Lezama stayed light on his feet, mixing feints with wide power punches while looking to catch the decorated wrestler before he could establish his grappling. Roughly ninety seconds into the fight, Lezama uncorked a spinning wheel kick that landed cleanly against Steveson’s head. The strike briefly halted the American’s forward pressure and drew a roar from the Monterrey crowd, proving that the veteran possessed genuine knockout danger. Rather than panicking, however, Steveson absorbed the shot well, quickly regained his composure, and immediately closed the distance.

Once the fight entered wrestling range, the momentum shifted dramatically. Steveson secured a powerful body lock, drove Lezama to the canvas, and instantly demonstrated the world-class grappling that had made him an Olympic champion. From top position he controlled Lezama’s hips, preventing any meaningful scramble while patiently improving position. Every attempt by Lezama to create space was met with heavy shoulder pressure and tight positional control, forcing the Mexican veteran to defend rather than attack.

As Steveson advanced into full mount, his striking became increasingly damaging. Heavy elbows and crushing right hands repeatedly found their target, opening cuts and leaving Lezama trapped beneath the relentless assault. Although Lezama showed toughness by covering up and attempting to survive, he was unable to escape the dominant position. The volume and accuracy of Steveson’s ground-and-pound continued to increase until the referee determined that Lezama could no longer intelligently defend himself.

The fight was stopped at 3:50 of the first round, awarding Steveson a technical knockout victory by punches from mount. The performance improved his professional MMA record to 3-0, with all three victories coming by first-round stoppage. Despite briefly eating the clean wheel kick, Steveson demonstrated composure under fire, relied on his elite wrestling to neutralize the danger, and finished with devastating ground-and-pound. The victory further fueled speculation that the undefeated heavyweight prospect was nearing a move to the sport’s biggest stage.
