Kyle Nelson defeated Blake Bilder via unanimous decision at UFC 289 on June 10, 2023, in Vancouver, Canada. Entering the featherweight bout as a significant underdog, Nelson delivered a disciplined performance that snapped Bilder’s undefeated streak and secured a crucial victory on home soil.

Fight Breakdown

  • Round 1: The fight began with a competitive stand-up exchange in the center of the Octagon. Bilder sought to establish his rhythm early by initiating wrestling sequences and attempting to secure a takedown. However, Nelson displayed excellent defensive wrestling, shutting down Bilder’s grappling entry points and keeping the fight standing.
  • Round 2: Nelson began using his size and 3-inch reach advantage to dictate the range. Outclassing Bilder on the feet, the Canadian veteran picked his spots cleanly, landed crisp counters, and frustrated Bilder’s attempts to close the distance. Nelson also successfully managed the pacing by using heavy clinch control against the fence when needed.
  • Round 3: With the fight slipping away, Bilder attempted to mount a late offense but struggled to land with high accuracy. Nelson continued to show superior striking defense and precise combinations, controlling the cage until the final bell.

(Note: Years after the bout, Bilder made headlines by claiming on a podcast that he had accidentally ingested LSD prior to this fight, describing the experience in the cage as highly intense.)
