Merab Dvalishvili vs. Umar Nurmagomedov was one of the highest-level bantamweight title fights in recent UFC history. The co-main event of UFC 311 on January 18, 2025, at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, lived up to its enormous expectations as Dvalishvili successfully defended his championship with a unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).

The opening round immediately showcased the contrasting styles of both men. Umar fought with exceptional composure, using his height, speed, and precise boxing to keep the champion at range. His jab repeatedly split Dvalishvili’s guard, and he mixed in sharp kicks to the legs and body whenever Merab attempted to pressure forward. Every time the champion shot for an early takedown, Umar displayed outstanding balance and defensive grappling, stuffing the attempts before quickly returning to striking range. Near the end of the round, Umar landed a perfectly timed straight right hand that snapped Dvalishvili’s head backward and briefly stunned him, giving the challenger an early psychological edge.

Round two continued much the same way. Umar’s confidence grew as he controlled the distance with clean combinations while making Merab work for every exchange. Dvalishvili never stopped moving, constantly feinting level changes and throwing combinations to disguise his wrestling entries, but Nurmagomedov’s takedown defense remained excellent. During one scramble, Umar even reversed position and briefly took the champion’s back before Merab escaped. Blood streamed from Dvalishvili’s nose after repeated straight punches landed cleanly, and many observers believed Umar had built a two-round lead.

The fight dramatically shifted in the third round. Merab’s legendary conditioning began to make the difference as he maintained an exhausting pace that few fighters can sustain. He increased his striking volume, mixing punches with relentless wrestling attempts. Although Umar continued defending many takedowns, he was forced to work at an increasingly frantic pace. Dvalishvili finally secured meaningful takedowns and immediately returned to his feet whenever Umar escaped, refusing to allow the challenger any chance to recover. Momentum steadily swung toward the champion as Umar’s output began to slow.

By the fourth round, Dvalishvili had fully imposed his style. His nonstop pressure forced Umar onto the defensive for extended stretches, and the challenger no longer landed his earlier combinations with the same speed and precision. Merab repeatedly chained together takedown attempts, clinch attacks, and high-volume striking, overwhelming Nurmagomedov with activity rather than power. Every successful escape by Umar simply led to another wrestling exchange seconds later. The champion’s relentless cardio became the defining factor of the fight.

The fifth and final round became a test of determination. Knowing the fight could still be close on the scorecards, both men fought with urgency. Umar landed several clean counters early, but Dvalishvili continued marching forward without slowing. In the closing minute, Merab landed one of his best punches of the night—an overhand right that visibly shook Nurmagomedov and energized the crowd. He finished te fight pressing forward, attempting additional takedowns and throwing combinations until the final horn.

When the scorecards were announced, all three judges awarded the contest to Dvalishvili by unanimous decision, with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46. The victory marked the first defeat of Umar Nurmagomedov’s professional MMA career and the first successful defense of Dvalishvili’s UFC Bantamweight Championship.

Statistically, the bout reflected just how competitive it was. Dvalishvili landed 111 significant strikes to Umar’s 104, attempted 30 takedowns while completing 7, and outworked the challenger with relentless pressure across all five rounds. Umar enjoyed greater success in the opening half of the fight with cleaner striking and elite takedown defense, but Dvalishvili’s unmatched pace, superior endurance, and sustained offense over the championship rounds ultimately convinced the judges.

The fight earned widespread praise as one of the best MMA contests of 2025. Fans and analysts highlighted it as a classic battle between technical precision and overwhelming pace. Dvalishvili proved once again that his conditioning and relentless pressure can break even the most technically gifted opponents, while Nurmagomedov demonstrated that he belongs among the elite of the bantamweight division despite suffering his first career defeat.
