On November 12, 1993, at UFC 1: The Beginning in Denver, Colorado, Brazilian jiu-jitsu representative Royce Gracie faced professional boxer Art Jimmerson in one of the most historically significant fights in mixed martial arts history. The bout was designed to answer one of the central questions behind the inaugural UFC tournament: which martial art was most effective in a real fight with minimal rules? It took only 2 minutes and 18 seconds for Gracie to provide an answer that would forever change combat sports.

Jimmerson entered the tournament as an accomplished professional boxer with more than 30 victories and a reputation for fast, accurate hands. Weighing approximately 196 pounds, he held nearly a 20-pound advantage over the lean, 176-pound Gracie. Confident in his boxing, Jimmerson famously stepped into the Octagon wearing only one boxing glove—his left glove remained on to protect his jab hand, while his right hand was left bare in hopes of improving his ability to grapple or land a knockout punch. The unusual decision earned him the nickname “One Glove” and became one of the defining images of early UFC history.

As soon as the fight began, Gracie calmly circled outside Jimmerson’s punching range.
